Alexander Chepurov

Alexander Chepurov is a Russian theatre historian, theorist and critic. He is a recipient of the Konstantin Stanislavsky Award (2008) and an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation. Chepurov graduated from the Saint Petersburg Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography in 1979. He received his PhD in 1984, his habilitation in 2006, and was appointed Professor at the Theatre Studies Department in 1989. He was Dean the of Theatre Studies Department from 1989 to 2005. He is Rector of the Saint Petersburg Theatre Academy (Russian State Institute of Performing Arts). He was on the Executive Committee of IFTR/FIRT from 1998 to 2005. His books on the history of Russian theatre include: Alexandrinsky’s Seagull (2001), Anton Chekhov and the Alexandrinsky Theatre (2006), Gogol’s Motifs in Valery Fokin, The Geometry of Tragedy: Oedipus Rex by Theodoros Terzopoulos 2008), Recollection of the Future: Meyerhold’s Masquerade (2014). He has published many articles on the history of Russian theatre in Russian and international journals. He has organised a number of international congresses, conferences and symposiums, including two FIRT conferences (1996, 2004) and the symposium Theatrical Heritage: Preservation, Studies and Interpretation of Theatre Texts (2015).
